A 30-year-old Indonesian woman remains in a hospital in Banda Aceh as a result of wounds inflicted on her after being beaten in public as a punishment decreed by a local court, according to the Daily Mail.
The barbaric public lashings, which occurred in Banda Aceh, are the latest to emerge from the only province in the country to implement the Islamic punishment.
The public lashings, which took place outside the city’s grand mosque after Friday prayers in the city of Lhokseumawe last week, drew a large crowd of observers.
Mazidah, who goes by one name, was convicted of adultery for the simple fact of being with a man in private places, in the presence of a man who was not her husband; an act punishable in this area of Indonesia, which has applied Islamic law or sharia since 2001.
The Indonesian woman was one of the 11 people sanctioned by the court to receive the same punishment.
The 34-year-old male also received 100 lashes, but did not require hospitalization.
